Jason let go of me when he saw Michael, and I stepped between them. Maybe he was afraid Michael would begin swinging. I definitely was afraid; I didn’t want Michael to get hurt.

“I can’t believe my eyes!” Michael said, shaking his head slowly. “I never thought you’d do this to me.”

It took me a second to realize what he’d said. Michael wasn’t angry at Jason; he was hurt – because of me. He thought I was cheating.

The position he found us in was fairly damning, but how could he think that I would fool around with Jason, or anyone?

“No, no! Michael, it’s not what it looks like,” I said quickly, not believing I actually had to say that. I thought he knew me better.

Michael grabbed his hair with both of his hands and pulled hard, then turned and fled from the lab.

“Michael, wait! Please, let me explain!” My cocktail dress caught at my legs as I ran after him, my high heels hindered my steps, and I couldn’t keep up. I kicked off my shoes and kept going.

People turned to watch as I raced barefoot through the building, but I didn’t care. Their murmurs and whispers followed me, but I paid no attention. I was on a mission and I needed them to get the hell out of my way.

I had to get to Michael, force him to listen to me, and make him understand. Then things could return to normal, and we would be okay again. I couldn’t stand knowing that Michael was that upset with me. It hurt!

In keeping with our stroll down high school memory lane, we’d come to the reunion on Michael’s old motorbike. By the time I reached the parking lot, his taillights were rapidly disappearing into the Alabama darkness.

Michael left me there, as if I was nothing important. He had never done anything like that, and that alone spoke volumes to how hurt he was.

I would not have believed that one day I could hurt Michael that badly, even if it was unintentional. He had to listen to me; he had to know the truth. It was all a big misunderstanding.

“Penny? Penny, what’s going on? What happened?” I heard Ashley’s breathless voice asking. She, too, had run all the way to the parking lot.

“Michael! He got it all wrong!” I cried.

“Got what wrong? What’s going on?” she asked again, but I didn’t have time to explain.

“I need your car,” I said, yanking her purse out of her hand and digging for the keys as I ran to where it was parked. She called after me, but I ignored her. I had to find him.

Luckily, Ashley’s car was fast.

With no idea where he’d gone, I followed my heart and his taillights.

I pressed on the gas as if my life depended on it, and my heart leaped in my chest when I saw his lights far ahead. Seeing him made me press harder, to get to him faster. I had to fix this.

When I got closer, my eyes met Michael’s in his side mirror.
